By Barge / Ferry

The most popular way to set foot on K’Gari – Fraser Island is by taking one of the vehicle barges / ferry. These barge services primarily cater to 4×4, camper and caravans. However, the barges also take walk on passengers. There are two primary barge services you can choose from depending on your starting location and preference: River Heads (Hervey Bay) and Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach).

River Heads (Hervey Bay)

Departing from River Heads near Hervey Bay, the journey takes around 50 minutes and offers breath-taking views along the way. The barge from River Heads has two main landing points on K’Gari – Fraser Island:

  1. Kingfisher Bay Resort: Perfect if you’re staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort or looking to explore the island’s west coast.
  2. Wanggoolba Creek: Situated towards the centre of the island, it’s ideal for those heading to K’Gari Beach Resort (formerly known as Eurong Beach Resort).

The barge service from River Heads is operated by SeaLink and runs several times a day. It is advisable to check the schedule and book in advance to secure your spot.

Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach)

Alternatively, you can take the Manta Ray Barge from Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach. This barge operates on a continuous loop service during daylight hours. Meaning you don’t have to adhere to a strict timetable and can arrive at a time that suits you. However, do keep in mind that this option is best for those with a 4WD, as it lands at Hook Point in the south of Fraser Island. You will require a 4×4 to drive along the eastern beach to reach the major sites and accommodation options.

Tip: Remember to check the local tide times when planning your journey as the eastern beach drive is only recommended at low tide.

Tip: Vehicle access permit is required to drive on K’Gari – Fraser Island.

One of the most notable businesses offering this service is Air Fraser Island. This local operator has a fleet of fixed wing aircraft that provide stunning panoramic views of the island during your flight. They offer a variety of services, from direct charter flights from Hervey Bay and the Sunny Coast. Also scenic tours that showcase the spectacular beauty of Fraser Island from above.

Some of their popular scenic tours include flights over the renowned 75 Mile Beach, the coloured sands of The Pinnacles, and the shipwreck of the S.S. Maheno. Their charter flights can be a practical choice if you’re short on time, as you can reach Fraser Island in just around 30 minutes from Hervey Bay.

Remember, while this is a unique and exhilarating way to reach the island, flight services are subject to weather conditions and require advanced booking. Visit the Air Fraser Island website or contact them directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

The island is accessible by 4WD only at low tide, and some areas may become inaccessible at high tide. This will help you avoid any potential disappointments and secure your path to an unforgettable adventure on Fraser Island.
